I am very happy to announce that I decided to treat myself to a temporary one-year work break. This will officially start on Friday, 15th July 2022.
After 37 years of mostly competitive S&P broking activity, running my own successful company for the past 8 years and at the wonderful age of 56, I am convinced that the timing is perfect and that I have more to gain than to lose.
I am committed to returning to business, and I find it important to highlight that the company will stay in operation and the support staff remains fully employed. Please continue to keep them busy with your daily information, circulations, regular market reports and make sure to keep JPMSB on your lists.
Having worked in Hamburg, Hong Kong and Singapore as well for a Chilean Shipowning company, travelling has always been part of my life for most of the last 35 years and the initial plan is to split the European summer between Hamburg and our flat in Athens and obviously some Greek Islands, followed by visits to some so far undefined sunny destinations.
This is the first time in my working life that I will be taking longer time off work. I feel very excited about it and love to prove my wife (and others) wrong that know me well enough to claim that I will not be able to stay away from business/work - or simply to say “no”.
Thanks to the excellent support of my clients, co-brokers and of course my family and friends, the last 8 years of self-employment were rewarding and successful, giving me the strength to take, announce and most of all go ahead with this decision while being in good health.
Having said that, let us be realistic: so-called “one man shows” are not the future of shipbroking. Consequently, without any pressure or urgency, I also like to use the time to analyse for myself, to think about and discuss potential structural changes in the set-up or an integration, enabling growth and ideally the addition of young(er) talent for the long-term benefit of present and future clients.
I am looking forward to working together with you in the future again. Stay healthy and enjoy the positive shipping markets.

During the past 37 years, Jan worked in senior positions for reputable German and International Shipowning and Shipbroking companies in Hamburg, Hong Kong and Singapore.
He spent a large part of his working life in the Far East. This includes 11 years in Hong Kong where Jan built up his excellent maritime and personal network all over Asia.
Before establishing his own company at the end of 2014, Jan worked more than 8 years for a major Chilean shipping and logisitics conglomerate, handling the fleet renewal for their ship owning entities in Chile, Peru and Argentina.
The German origin, time spent in the Far East, coupled with the South American expertise offers a unique blend of knowledge and connections to our customers. We have direct and competent access into economically active but culturally challenging markets.
Having mostly dealt with large ship owning companies that own a variety of vessels, Jan has always been dealing with Bulkers, Container/Multi-Purpose vessels and all kind of Tankers. This includes Newbuildings, Second Hand and Recycling business.
His in-house responsibilities included authority to negotiate sales and purchases of ships, he was leading the full internal coordination of pre-delivery processes and the attendance at world-wide closing meetings to release purchase monies/sign and exchange delivery documents in capacity as Attorney-in-Fact.
It should also be mentioned that Jan has a proven track record in establishing new and rebuilding established shipbroking companies, as successfully done in Hamburg, Hong Kong and Singapore.
